FREE conducted a level III energy audit complying with ISO 50001 with the main scope of reducing the energy consumption of Zamil Shipyards’ shipyard facility in Dammam.
Zamil Shipyards – a Zamil Offshore Services Company – is a 24/7 one-stop practical, reliable, and durable solution for ship/rig repair and shipbuilding. The facility is strategically located at the Dammam port. It started the shipbuilding business successfully in 2002 and delivered over fifty (50) vessels.
Zamil Shipyards aims to be the prominent Maritime Services Provider that is capable of delivering practical, durable, and reliable solutions.
In 2010, the company decided to invest in a new shipbuilding and ship repair facility adjacent to the older shipyard in King Abdul – Aziz Port, Dammam, Saudi Arabia with a total area of 230,000 m2 with a quayside length of 700 meters. The shipyard is certified to the following ISO 9001:2015 for a Quality Management System, OHSAS 18001:2007 for Health & Safety Management System, and ISO 14001:2015 for Environment Management System.
Following the facility’s demand to decrease their energy consumption and increase their resilience, FREE energy conducted an extensive and detailed analysis of all energy streams in the facility to identify sources of waste in the industrial facility, with the end purpose of energy cost optimization, waste & pollution control by highlighting wastage in the major areas and identifying & relating gaps in energy inputs to production outputs.
According to ISO 50001:2018, a Significant Energy Use (SEU) is energy use accounting for Substantial energy consumption and/or offering considerable potential for energy performance improvement. Accordingly, SEUs have been identified and also analyzed in the audit.
No cost/low-cost energy conservation measures that can be implemented in the shipyard directly were identified. Accordingly, the total possible savings of low-cost/no-cost measures are around 1.52 % of the total energy consumption of Zamil Shipyard referencing the year 2019.
Investment opportunities for energy performance improvement were also identified for lighting, split units, water heating, compressed air systems, and welding machines. Moreover, an optimal solar PV plant is suggested as well. The maximum possible total savings of investment measures is about 3.961 GWh or around 32 % of the total energy consumption of Zamil Shipyard referencing the year 2019.
FREE energy completed the energy audit and submitted their results to Zamil Shipyard officially in the second half of 2020; the aim of which was to increase their resilience and competitive edge in a fast-changing world by presenting a strategic plan for potential investments that will help further reduce the marginal energy cost as operations grow in the future. The proposed solutions can achieve a total potential savings of around 34.45% – most of which the board has already begun implementing.
FREE energy is honored to have provided its services to Zamil Shipyard and to have contributed to reducing the carbon footprint of such a successful and esteemed establishment in the gulf region.
