Remote labor camps operating on diesel generators face continuously rising fuel costs and increasing pressure to improve operational efficiency without compromising power reliability. ZOMCO x FREE energy was engaged to engineer and deliver a hybrid solar fuel-saver solution for the Jazan Labor Camp, integrating a ground-mounted solar PV system with the existing diesel generation plant through an intelligent energy management controller. 

The project was engineered around the facility’s existing 2 x 750 kVA diesel generators, enabling the photovoltaic system to dynamically offset daytime electrical demand while keeping generator loading within safe operating limits. The team delivered the complete engineering design, procurement, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the hybrid solution, including the PV generation plant, inverter system, energy management controller, monitoring platform, and integration with the camp’s existing electrical distribution infrastructure. 

The completed 148.8 kWp solar fuel-saver system is designed to generate approximately 268.5 MWh of clean electricity annually, reducing diesel fuel consumption by offsetting daytime generator operation and delivering annual operating cost savings of approximately SAR 188,000. The optimized hybrid control strategy maintains generator stability during rapid load variations while minimizing fuel consumption, emissions, and operating expenditure, achieving an estimated 2.8 year investment payback period. 

This project demonstrates FREE energy’s expertise in integrating renewable energy with conventional diesel generation, delivering intelligent fuel-saving solutions that improve energy efficiency, reduce operating costs, and enhance power reliability for remote industrial facilities and labor camps operating in off-grid or generator-dependent environments.

Nesma & Partners, one of Saudi Arabia’s leading diversified engineering, construction, and contracting groups, engaged FREE energy to design and deliver a grid-tied fuel-saver solar system for its Workshop facility in Dammam, part of a pair of solar deployments the group commissioned across its Dammam operations to reduce reliance on conventional grid and diesel power. 

Fuel-saver solar solutions differ from standard grid-tied systems in that they are purpose-engineered to integrate with a facility’s existing power infrastructure, whether grid-connected, diesel-generated, or hybrid, to displace the highest-cost portion of energy consumption first. The engineering team designed the Nesma Workshop system under this principle, delivering full EPC scope, engineering, procurement, and construction, to integrate a 1.1 MWp solar installation with the facility’s existing electrical distribution and load profile. 

The Workshop system is being delivered alongside a companion 1.6 MWp installation at the neighboring Nesma PMV facility, together representing 2.7 MWp of combined fuel-saver solar capacity across Nesma’s Dammam sites, materially reducing operating costs while strengthening energy resilience for the group. No independently published source describing this specific installation was found; the figures above come from internal project records.

Few projects in FREE energy’s portfolio demonstrate the breadth of the team’s energy audit capability quite like this Saudi Energy Efficiency Center pilot program. Acting as a subcontractor to AFCC, a Saudi MEP and energy services firm, FREE energy delivered 50 ASHRAE Level I audits and 20 ASHRAE Level II audits across more than 50 commercial facilities in Riyadh, a scale of engagement that required disciplined project management alongside consistent audit quality across a highly diverse building portfolio. 

The audited portfolio spanned at least six distinct business types: five-star and mid-scale hospitality properties including Ritz Carlton, Sheraton, Novotel, and Rosh Rayhan by Rotana; major shopping destinations including Panorama Mall, Al Hamra Mall, Riyadh Park, and Yasmine Center; healthcare facilities including Riyadh Care Hospital and Hospital Msheri; multiple school campuses under the Tarbiyah Namouthajiyah network; restaurants including Al Romansiah and the Hamburgini chain; supermarkets such as Al Sadhan Hypermarket and Abdallah Al Othaim; and commercial office towers including Khatib & Alami, Al Inma Bank, and Princess Al Anoud Towers. Each facility received a site-specific ASHRAE standard audit examining lighting, HVAC, BMS, and building envelope performance. 

Across the full portfolio, the audits identified an average energy savings potential of 22%, with the consolidated findings feeding into SEEC’s national initiative to benchmark Energy Use Intensity across Saudi Arabia’s commercial building sector, a data set that continues to inform national energy policy and sector-wide efficiency standards. AFCC Executive Director Jad Darwiche confirmed that FREE energy “demonstrated professionalism, dedication, and a strong knowledge base throughout the project, delivering all required reports and recommendations on time,” with performance meeting the standards expected by AFCC, EY, and SEEC as joint stakeholders in the initiative. 

This pilot project stands as one of the most comprehensive commercial energy audit programs in FREE energy’s history, and establishes strong credentials in large scale, multi-facility ASHRAE Level I and Level II audit delivery, a capability directly relevant to national energy efficiency initiatives, ESCO partnerships, and portfolio-wide commercial energy benchmarking programs.

Project: Sidra Compound Residential Solar PV Installation

Premium residential developments in Saudi Arabia are increasingly incorporating on-site solar generation as both a cost saving measure and a sustainability differentiator for residents. PME energy, the joint venture between specialty contractor Protect Middle East and FREE energy, was engaged by Al Muhaidib Group to design, install, and commission a solar solution for the Sidra Compound, a residential real estate development in Riyadh. 

The project delivered a 400 kWp roof mounted, on-grid solar system engineered to serve the compound’s shared infrastructure and common area electricity demand. As with the team’s other residential scale deployments, the design process balanced aesthetic considerations appropriate to a high-end residential setting with the technical requirements of a grid-connected PV system, with module layout, structural mounting, cabling routes, and inverter placement all planned to minimize visual and operational disruption to residents while maximizing energy yield. 

Since commissioning, the system has generated SAR 117,500 in annual cost savings, 652 MWh of clean energy per year, and an estimated 510 tons of CO2 reduction annually for the compound, reflecting the level of executive attention major Saudi real estate developers are now placing on renewable energy integration within premium residential assets. 

This project showcases the team’s capability to deliver high quality, aesthetically considered residential scale solar solutions for premium real estate developments, a growing segment across Saudi Arabia as developers seek to differentiate their communities with tangible sustainability credentials and lower shared service costs for residents.

Project: Confidential, 2 MWp Rooftop Solar EPC for a Large-Scale Logistics and Distribution Facility

Logistics and distribution facilities are ideal candidates for large scale commercial solar because of their expansive, uninterrupted rooftop areas and consistently high daytime energy loads from cooling, lighting, and material handling equipment. For one such facility in Riyadh, operating under a confidentiality agreement that precludes naming the client, FREE energy was selected to design, install, and commission a 2 MWp rooftop solar PV system across the facility’s substantial warehouse footprint. 

The engineering team approached the project with a focus on maximizing usable rooftop area while accounting for structural loading limits, shading patterns, fire access pathways, and equipment maintenance clearances, the standard technical considerations that define a well engineered commercial rooftop solar EPC project at this scale. High-efficiency PV modules and inverters were selected to guarantee performance over the system’s operating life, with the installation engineered, procured, and constructed under FREE energy’s full EPC scope, from initial system design through final grid-tie commissioning. 

Since commissioning, the 2 MWp system has delivered SAR 592,000 in annual cost savings for the facility, generating 3.29 GWh of clean electricity every year while cutting the site’s carbon footprint by an estimated 2,570 tons of CO2 annually, figures that place this project among the most impactful commercial rooftop solar installations in FREE energy’s Saudi Arabia portfolio. The scale of the savings underscores the strong economics of commercial solar PV for high-consumption logistics and warehouse assets operating under Saudi Arabia’s abundant solar irradiance.

Maintaining stable indoor conditions in office buildings located in Saudi Arabia’s extreme climate requires HVAC systems to respond not only to overall cooling demand, but also to changing solar loads, building orientation, glazing exposure, occupancy patterns, and internal zoning. AlJomaih Beverage Company engaged FREE energy to conduct a detailed HVAC assessment of its head office following recurring occupant complaints of high temperatures near glazed perimeter areas, excessive airflow noise, uneven cooling, and temperature differences between interconnected zones. 

Prior modifications had introduced new thermostats and motorized volume control dampers for more localized temperature control. However, closing dampers in individual spaces increased airflow and noise elsewhere, while occupants near the eastern facade continued to experience discomfort in the morning and those near the western facade experienced elevated temperatures in the afternoon, indicating the issue could not be resolved through controls and zoning changes alone. 

FREE energy developed a zone by zone HVAC load model using the building layout, orientation, envelope characteristics, glazing areas, occupancy, ventilation requirements, internal loads, and actual operating conditions. Cooling loads and required airflow rates were calculated using HAP and compared against the total capacity, sensible capacity, supply air conditions, and airflow capability of each installed packaged air conditioning unit. The assessment also factored in updated climatic design conditions, which showed peak cooling dry bulb temperatures had risen roughly 1.7 to 2.0 degrees Celsius compared with the earlier weather data used for the original system design, while cooling degree days had increased by 10.4%. 

The analysis found that although most units retained sufficient total cooling capacity, several were operating with very limited sensible capacity and airflow margins during peak conditions, a critical distinction since a unit can appear adequate on rated capacity alone while still failing to manage a building’s high sensible heat gains along heavily glazed perimeter zones. FREE energy developed a phased improvement roadmap starting with restoring adequate cooling capacity in the most critical areas, followed by a full testing, adjusting, and balancing exercise to verify airflow distribution, reduce noise, and confirm correct supply air quantities per space, and finishing with a re-baselined control strategy covering zone airflow limits, pressure control, damper operation, and outdoor air logic. 

This project demonstrates FREE energy’s ability to diagnose complex HVAC problems that cannot be resolved through equipment replacement or controls adjustment in isolation, combining site investigation, building load simulation, equipment capacity verification, climate analysis, and airflow assessment into a technically grounded roadmap for improving thermal comfort and HVAC reliability.

Hotels are notoriously energy hungry buildings, with chilled water plants and building management systems that, left unoptimized, can quietly consume far more electricity than guest comfort actually requires. ZOMCO x FREE energy, operating under agency agreement between Zamil Operations & Maintenance and FREE energy, was engaged to conduct a complete ASHRAE energy audit for the Grand Hyatt Al Khobar Hotel and Residences, one of the flagship hospitality assets in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province. 

The audit focused specifically on the hotel’s chilled water system, a common source of hidden energy waste in large hospitality properties, alongside a broader review of BMS controlled equipment across the building. The engineering team traced inefficiencies in cooling plant sequencing, pump operation, and control logic, and identified optimization measures deliverable through BMS reprogramming and targeted equipment upgrades, an approach that typically achieves meaningful savings without disrupting guest facing hotel operations. 

The audit projected a 10.72% reduction in overall energy consumption, with a 4.25 year payback period on the recommended measures. Grand Hyatt Al Khobar General Manager Nizar Weshah confirmed the value of the engagement, stating that the audit “provided clear, actionable recommendations that will enable us to save significant amounts of energy,” and commending the team’s communication and collaborative approach throughout the process.

Refineries rank among the most energy-intensive facility types in the world, and their HVAC infrastructure, often spread across hundreds of individual units serving control rooms, administrative buildings, and process areas, is a significant yet frequently overlooked source of avoidable energy consumption. Saudi Aramco engaged ZOMCO x FREE energy to conduct a detailed HVAC technical assessment across two of its major Eastern Province facilities, the Juaymah natural gas liquids facility and the Ras Tanura refinery, combining a full energy consulting and audit scope with an environmental review of the global warming potential of the refrigerants and cooling technologies in use on site. 

More than 200 HVAC units across both complexes were physically assessed, evaluating equipment age, refrigerant type, cooling load performance, controls integration, and maintenance condition against ASHRAE and international best-practice benchmarks, using a combination of on-site inspections and data logger monitoring to establish efficiency baselines. Each unit was scored for retrofit or replacement potential, with findings consolidated into a prioritized action plan that balanced capital cost against projected energy savings, consistent with an ISO 50001-aligned energy management approach. Units using higher-GWP refrigerants were specifically flagged for phased replacement, aligning the recommendations with both energy efficiency and emissions-reduction objectives. 

The assessment found that approximately 90% of HVAC units across both sites required replacement, and identified a pathway to a 35% reduction in HVAC-related energy consumption across the assessed units, with an estimated payback period of approximately three years on the recommended retrofit measures. Deliverables included a technical assessment report and a phased replacement roadmap to support Aramco’s future investment decisions in higher-efficiency systems, alongside benefits in operational resilience, enhanced safety conditions, and improved indoor comfort. 

Completed in 2023, the assessment was carried out in close coordination with Aramco’s facilities engineering team and forms one part of a broader, multi-year relationship with Saudi Aramco that also spans cathodic protection solar systems and a dedicated multi-site solar retrofit program. The project illustrates the team’s ability to work within the demanding safety, security, and technical protocols of a major national oil company while still delivering clear, actionable, and financially justified energy-saving recommendations at scale.

Solar assets, like any piece of critical infrastructure, need periodic technical review to keep performing at the level they were originally designed for, particularly across multi-site portfolios where system age, installation quality, and environmental exposure vary considerably from one location to the next. Saudi Aramco engaged ZOMCO x FREE energy to retrofit and optimize the solar photovoltaic systems powering eight of its remote telecommunications sites, spread across two industrial hubs, Riyadh and Dammam. 

The engineering team carried out a full technical audit of each existing solar installation, assessing module degradation, inverter performance, mounting structure integrity, wiring and combiner-box condition, and monitoring system functionality, then replaced outdated modules and supporting components with new equipment to meet current standards. Underperforming components were flagged for replacement or upgrade, restoring each system to, or above, its original rated output across a combined installed capacity of roughly 186 kWp. 

Delivering the retrofit across two major industrial hubs required careful coordination to minimize disruption to Aramco’s ongoing telecommunications operations at each site while restoring full solar generation capacity. The modernization sustains Aramco’s renewable energy commitments at these remote communication sites, ensuring optimal performance, extended system lifespan, and reduced maintenance needs, while reducing reliance on conventional power and enhancing operational resilience across critical communication infrastructure in Saudi Arabia. 

Completed on 21 September 2025, the project reinforced the team’s position as a long-term technical partner to Saudi Aramco, complementing the company’s separate HVAC assessment and cathodic protection solar work carried out for Aramco elsewhere in the Kingdom. The engagement demonstrates capability in solar asset management, PV system retrofit engineering, and multi-site renewable energy optimization for asset owners across Saudi Arabia looking to extend the life and performance of aging or underperforming solar PV systems.

Nesma & Partners engaged FREE energy to design and deliver a 1.6 MWp grid-tied fuel-saver solar system for its PMV facility in Dammam, reducing the facility’s reliance on diesel generation as the second half of a two-site solar deployment across Nesma’s Dammam operations. The system integrates directly with the facility’s existing electrical infrastructure to displace the highest-cost portion of its energy consumption first, the defining principle of a fuel-saver solar design. 

Nesma’s own published case study on the installation, referred to there as the PMV Fabrication Shop, describes a system built from 1,966 Trina Solar N-type monocrystalline panels paired with Sungrow on-grid inverters running at 98.5% efficiency. Per that case study, the system generates roughly 727,164 kWh of clean electricity annually, meeting 46% of the shop’s power needs, cutting diesel consumption by an estimated 242,388 liters a year, and delivering approximately SAR 278,746 in annual savings with a projected 320.78% return on investment over 25 years, while eliminating an estimated 655,788 kg of CO2 emissions annually. 

Together with the neighboring 1.1 MWp Nesma Workshop installation, the two systems represent 2.7 MWp of combined fuel-saver solar capacity for Nesma & Partners in Dammam, reinforcing FREE energy’s position as a repeat solar EPC partner for one of the Kingdom’s largest engineering and contracting conglomerates.
